Becoming a Better Engineer, Conclusion
Innovation is not about building everything from scratch, it’s about knowing when to build, when to adapt, when to learn from others, and when to jump in the deep end of the pool.

Chris/Phase Dock engineered and built a remote learning lab structure for LabsLand and DigiKey which will be featured at ASEE 2026 this month. You’ll find it in the STMicroelectronics booth.
That simple question sparked the idea behind building a human-machine interface (HMI) that was not only functional, but intuitive, reducing wasted time and operator error, as well as minimizing the potential for damage.
Real world problems are messier than academic exercises. This experience stood in sharp contrast to my university coursework, where project requirements are typically predefined and static. In the real world, I learned, projects are anything but fixed.
I had freedom to design and build a human-machine interface (HMI) to monitor and automate the vacuum management process. This project became my gateway into physical computing.
